A core generator is a technology for extracting vast amounts of zero-point energy from a supermassive black hole, specifically the one at the center of a galaxy. The black hole is spun up to a very high rate of rotation to turn it into a toroidal singularity.[1] The process is exceedingly dangerous, because if done incorrectly or sabotaged, it can nucleate a new universe and destroy the galaxy. There are two known core generators: One in the Milky Way, constructed by the F'sherl-Ganni and taken over by the Plenipotent Dominion, and one in Andromeda, constructed by the Pa'anuri.

Milky Way Core Generator[]

The core generator in the Milky Way was constructed in a millennia-long project by the F'sherl-Ganni with the help of the dark matter Pa'anuri. It was ostensibly intended to generate enough power to move the Milky Way off its collision course with Andromeda and avoid further conflict between the two civilizations. In reality, however, the Pa'anuri planned to sabotage the project in order to destroy the Milky Way entirely.[2]

Alternate timelines[]

In the Averted Future timeline, shortly after the generator was activated, the Pa'anuri "observers" overloaded it and induced the birth of a new universe, which threatened to consume the Milky Way (while also severing the galaxy from the rest of the original universe[3]).

In the new timeline, the sabotage was prevented by a preemptive attack against the Milky Way Pa'anuri, who all died when the F'Sherl-Ganni were able to blanket the galactic core region in Teraport Area Denial that was fatal to them. The completed core generator was hijacked by Petey and the rest of the fleetmind, who renamed themselves the Plenipotent Dominion and became the dominant superpower of the Milky Way.

Andromeda Core Generator[]

The Pa'anuri built a core generator of their own in Andromeda[4], which was about thirty-five times bigger than the one in the Milky Way.[5] They used their massive power advantage to drive Petey out of Andromeda[6], to teraport planet-sized warships between galaxies[7], and to power a Long Gun that could hit any target in the Milky Way.[8]
