Haley Sorlie
Haley Sorlie[1] was a commissioned officer and later ambassador for the UNS. For much of her time in the story, she served under General Apala Bala-Amin.
Character Description[]
She is a tall thin built human with blond hair and a small ponytail. She studied space engineering for fifteen years and holds multiple degrees[2], has a keen eye for detail and is extremely fascinated by alien technology.[3]
Character History[]
Sol[]
Sorlie was born on Earth, though her family moved off-planet (presumably within Sol) when she was eleven.[4] She grew up dreaming of building spaceships, which drove her to study engineering for fifteen years. Unable to use her talent in the private sector, she originally enlisted with the UNS military hoping to design spaceships, but instead found a career as an Image Analyst, "spotting dangerous things" in inbound traffic for Sol's port-of-entry office, serving under General Apala Bala-Amin aboard the UNS Chesapeake.[5]

Lt Sorlie, UNS officer
When the Neosynchronicity requested entry to Sol carrying the Oafan delegation and their mercenary escort, Lieutenant Sorlie noticed the ship's unusually dense hull[6], which was entirely made of the fantastically expensive post-transuranic alloys that are normally only used in the construction of annie-plants. After escalating the request to Bala-Amin, she arranged for the ship to pass in front of a neutrino detector in order to get a view of its neutrino shadow.[7]
Invited to get a closer look, Bala-Amin took Sorlie along to inspect the Neosynchronicity in person.[8] Pressed for time but eager to find out more about the visitors and their ship, Bala-Amin assigned Sorlie as a cultural liaison to the Oafan delegation[9]. She received implants that would let her communicate with her handlers on Chesapeake while also transmitting everything she saw and heard.[10]
Dom Atlantis[]
Shortly after arriving in Dom Atlantis, Schlock told Sorlie several things about the events at Credomar Habitat that the UNS had kept out of public knowledge, including some hints at the nature of Long Guns[11], following which Sorlie requested (and received) the classified details about Credomar from her handlers. This knowledge later allowed her to deduce that the Neosynchronicity also carried such a weapon.[12] Sorlie learned several more UNS secrets from the mercenaries that eroded her trust in the UNS military, including her commanding officer Bala-Amin, but reluctantly continued her assignment.[13][14]
This assignment was quickly interrupted by a sophisticated nanite attack on Dom Atlantis, which simultaneously suborned Earth's orbital ring to fire on the surface, and brain-hacked the police to attack the population. In order to prevent civil war, Bala-Amin gave Sorlie a field promotion and authorized her to hire the mercenaries to save the city.[15]
Eina-Afa[]
Several months after the attack, the Neoafan Freehold formally requested the opening of a human embassy in Eina-Afa. Upon hearing about the nature of the ancient megastructure, Sorlie enthusiastically volunteered as an attaché,[16] though she likely needn't have, because her commanding officer Bala-Amin was promptly appointed as ambassador by newly inaugurated UNS Interim Secretary-General Breya Andreyasn[17], and immediately delegated the task of setting up the embassy to Sorlie.[18]
